I think for most people who have made it to university or graduation, working hard is not a problem. The major problem is maintaining motivation. Here are some useful hints

Reading and writing are important in addition to thinking.
Learn and re-learn your branch of knowledge
Staying busy and enjoy what you’re doing
Never do things by halves

There is no substitute for hard work. And nothing comes easy.
